Toback and Health Committee learn dangers of Melanoma
Skin Cancer is the Silent Epidemic

Mineola, NY - Incidents of Malignant Melanoma, a form of skin cancer, are increasing faster than any other cancer, with New York's rate of melanoma ranked 4th in the nation after California, Florida and Texas. It is the most prevalent cancer among young women, between the ages of 25-29.

These startling facts were brought to light at the most recent mini hearing before Health Committee Chairman Jeff Toback (D-Oceanside) and members of the committee, by Colette Coyne, of the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign. Ms. Coyne has been a tireless advocate for public awareness of melanoma since the death of her 30-year-old daughter Colette Marie Brigid Coyne, who passed away from skin cancer in 1998.

This foundation's goal is to increase public awareness regarding the dangers of skin cancer and to help change social attitudes and behaviors toward unsafe tanning and sun exposure.

"Colette's story had a grave and significant impact on everyone," said Legislator Toback. "Although everyone is aware of the harmful risk factors associated with exposure to UV rays, its obvious more still needs to be done and education is a great first step."

Legislator Toback is also considering proposing stricter licensing regulations for tanning salons in Nassau County, especially when it comes to minors.
