Legislator Bosworth Visits 4-H Summer Youth Program at
Manhasset/ Great Neck EOC
Legislator Judi Bosworth (D-Great Neck) recently attended a Cornell Cooperative Extension program located at the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC. Cornell Cooperative is a not-for-profit organization that brings families programs focused on horticulture, the environment, health, nutrition, consumer skills, and parenting and youth development. Legislator Bosworth joined youngsters participating in the 4-H Community Summer Youth Program, a 4-day series of classes in nutrition, healthy eating, and obesity reduction.
The 4-H Community Summer Youth Program provides children 9-12 years old with essential life skills, in accordance with the New York State Department of Education Learning Standards. This summer alone, the Youth Program will be offered to 30 youth centers throughout the county, and will help benefit over 600 children.
Legislator Bosworth served as a helping hand as the children chopped garlic, onions, and peppers in preparation for cooking black bean chili. She also assisted them with fun activities such as a “Whole Grains Word Search” and a “Food Safety Word Match.” Earlier in the week, the children cooked whole-wheat pancakes, veggie salad wraps, and fruit parfaits. The children also had a chance to learn how to read nutrition fact labels, as well as learn the nutritional values for the meals they were cooking.
Legislator Bosworth said “It was wonderful to participate with the teachers from the Cornell Cooperative Extension program and from the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC. The students had so much fun preparing their meal while learning about healthy nutrition. The lessons learned here will hopefully encourage the students to continue to make healthy food choices throughout their lives.”
