NASSAU LEGISLATOR LISANNE ALTMANN SAYS NO WAY TO TOLLS ON THE LIE

Nassau County Legislator Lisanne Altmann (D-Great Neck) today announced her opposition to Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi’s proposal to institute congestion pricing on LI highways.

“It’s exactly the wrong solution at the wrong time for Nassau’s motorists,” said Legislator Altmann.

Legislator Altmann proposed that the County Executive immediately begin consideration of flex time for County employees, which would give the ability to work four ten-hour shifts, instead of the current five day week.

“Government can lead by example and set new industry standards right here on Long Island,” said Legislator Altmann.  “If other business and municipalities follow suit, up to 20 percent of our workforce would be off the roadways at peak hours. It’s a win for everyone – drivers, taxpayers – even parents could end up with more time with their kids.  On top of that, this proposal would give people time to shop in their local downtowns, which should be a big plus for their communities.”

In addition, Altmann will propose expanded bus routes for LI Bus.  “Long Island Bus is a popular and cost effective means of transportation for thousands of Nassau County residents.”  Altmann will also urge the County Executive to “jump start” the HUB proposal that will finally consider mass transit alternatives for the future.  “Nassau desperately needs a mass transit solution to north-south travel.”

Legislator Altmann will also ask the County Executive to revive Nassau County’s Master Plan.   “The County can focus on many of these transportation issues in a comprehensive update of its Master Plan.  I’m not sure why the County has not done this.  Maybe the Plan has been put in a folder and filed in some storage room.  It’s time to dig it out.”
