1862 Civil War Battle Re-Enactment at Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Nassau County Legislator David Mejias (D-North Massapequa) announced today that a re-creation of a Civil War skirmish will take place at Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Saturday, July 22 and 23, 2006.
Set in 1862, during the Battle of Fair Oaks/ Seven Pines, Old Bethpage Village Restoration will come alive with the sights and sounds of military fervor as this hamlet, transformed into a quiet Virginia crossroads, is occupied by Union infantry and defended by Confederate infantry and artillery. On July 22nd and 23rd, the forces of the North and South will face one another as they skirmish within the historic village.
The Village, normally interpreting 19th century life on Long Island, is dedicating this weekend to presenting a more vivid portrayal of the Civil War period. Morning skirmishes north of town and an afternoon “battle” on both days are scheduled between Union and Confederate soldiers. In addition to planned skirmishes, the men will perform military drills, musket firings and camp life duties. 19th century fiddle music will be performed each day from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
This event is co-hosted by Company H, 119th New York Volunteer Historical Association, the Fourteenth Brooklyn Regiment, N.Y.S.M., Co. E, the 19th Virginia Infantry Association, the 57th Virginia Infantry Association, and the 67th New York Volunteer Infantry Association – historical organizations all dedicated to the preservation of Civil War History.
