Mejias Named Chairman of Health Committee

Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias (D-North Massapequa) was recently named the new chairman for the legislature’s Health Committee, assuming the role previously held by Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury).

“Healthy living should be a priority for all Nassau County residents, and I’m excited to be in a position to positively impact the physical and mental health of everyone from young children to senior citizens,” Mejias said.

Mejias, an avid runner who recently completed his third consecutive Long Island Half-Marathon, has made preventing obesity a priority in his district, hosting seminars on the dangers of over-eating and screening the documentary “Super-Size Me.”

Mejias will work with Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi to further his “Healthy Nassau” initiative, a plan to make Nassau the nation’s healthiest county by 2020 by building upon current plans and adding new ones in order to sustain a healthy environment, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Mejias is also the chair for the Minority Affairs, Economic Development and Labor committees, as well as the vice-chair for Public Safety and Planning Development and the Environment committees, and a member of the Judiciary and Rules committees.
