Jacobs Announces Two Free “Quit Smoking” Programs

In an effort to help residents keep their New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking, Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) is encouraging residents to participate in two free programs being offered by the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH).

“The sooner people quit smoking, the sooner they can start living healthier, longer lives,” Jacobs said. “With the New Year right around the corner, there is no better time to make a positive life change and start 2007 smoke-free. I am confident that these programs offered by our Health Department will make a difference.”

The NCDOH, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers’ Quitline, offers six weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy, commonly known as “the patch.” This program is available to medically-eligible county residents. Residents can call the New York Smokers’ Quitline at 1-866-697-8487 to determine their medical eligibility. The Quitline is available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. land on weekends from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The NCDOH is also offering free classes to help residents quit smoking. The classes are conducted by the Health Department’s tobacco cessation specialists.

Residents can participate in either or both programs at any time.
