Mangano Opposes Home Energy Tax
And Program Cuts

Legislator Edward P. Mangano was outraged as the Nassau County Legislature, over the objections of nine Republican members, passed a Home Energy Tax on all county residents. In a 10-9 vote, the Democratic Majority on the Legislature approved the New Tax. The Home Energy Tax will now impose a 2.5% tax on all residential heating and energy sources. This includes LIPA, natural gas, oil, steam services, propane, coal and even firewood. This tax applies to all residents including seniors.
Legislator Mangano was dismayed by the Democrats’ attempt at candy-coating the tax increase as a “revenue enhancement”. “I am certain residents will consider the additional money out of their wallets a ‘detriment’ rather than an ‘enhancement’,” said Legislator Mangano.
The creation of the Home Energy Tax also comes on the heels of another blow to the residents of Nassau County. County Executive Suozzi recently sent out notices to all county-funded youth and senior programs to tell them that their 2009 funding will be eliminated or severely cut as of March 31st. “These youth and senior programs perform a vital function to the community. The youth programs provide essential counseling and allow parents to go to work knowing their children are safe. Additionally, many seniors in this county are on fixed incomes and have been struggling due to the rising taxes over the past 5 years. Reduction or elimination of their programs, such as Meals on Wheels, will leave many without daily meals,” said Legislator Mangano. “The tax and the program cuts are hurting those who are most vulnerable.”
Despite Republican opposition, the New Tax passed on February 23, 2009 and will take effect no later than June 1, 2009, and Suozzi’s program cuts shall be implemented as of March 31, 2009.
