March 10, 2009
Dear Neighbor,
At a community meeting the US Navy held on March 3, 2009 they reported the results of their environmental investigation. The Navy reported several homes and street samples in the area of 11th Street, Bethpage exceeded New York State Department of Health standards. In lay terms, the Navy discovered soil vapors have escaped their property and seeped into basements of neighboring homes. The Navy has offered testing and remediation to some homes. I think more can be done! Accordingly, I am writing to alert you that I have written to Congressman Peter King requesting his assistance as follows:
- Free testing should be immediately offered to all homeowners residing south of the Naval Weapons Reserve Plant.
- Expedite in home remediation
- Expedite an on-site remediation system
- Designate funding to compensate affected homeowners.
- Expand the radius of neighborhood street testing and continue testing until redundant non-detect results are confirmed.
I am pleased to report Congressman King is advocating for us!
In, addition I have called on the New York State Department of Health to conduct a cancer survey in this area.

Dear Commissioner Daines,
I am writing to you to request a cancer survey be conducted in Bethpage, New York. I respectfully request this study be expedited. The basis for the expedited review is as follows:
The Department of the Navy recently advised residents of results of an environmental investigation they conducted in homes and streets neighboring the former Naval Weapons Reserve Plant (NWIPR) plant in Bethpage. The results identified the presence ofvolatile organic compounds (VOC’s) both in homes and streets neighboring the property. In lay terms, the Navy discovered toxic soil vapors have escaped the Navy property and entered homes. In several instances these vapors exceed New York State Department of Health Guidelines. At minimum I believe the test boundaries should be south of the Navy property to the Railroad Avenue bordered by Stewart Ave to the East and Railroad tracks to the west. Dear Congressman King,
I am writing you regarding a serious health issue that has affected citizens who reside in Bethpage. The Department of the Navy recently advised residents of results of an environmental investigation they conducted in homes and streets neighboring the former Naval Weapons Reserve Plant (NWIPR) plant in Bethpage. The results identified the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) both in homes and streets neighboring the property. In lay terms, the Navy discovered that toxic soil vapors have escaped the Navy property and entered homes. In several instances these vapors exceed New York State Department of Health Guidelines.
To date, the Navy has agreed to perform tests in some homes and is offering a remediation plan for affected homes. I think more should be done. Accordingly, I am asking that you request the U.S. Navy to take the following actions:
- Free testing should be immediately offered to all homeowners residing south ofthe NWIRP.
- Expedite in home remediation
- Expedite an on-site remediation system
- Designate funding to compensate affected homeowners.
- Expand the radius of neighborhood street testing and continue testing until redundant non-detect results are confirmed.
In, addition I am calling on the New York State Department of Health to conduct a cancer survey in this area.
Please contact me at your earliest opportunity to discuss this important health and safety issue.
