Yatauro Announces New Intermunicipal Agreement Between the County, Glen Cove, and Sea Cliff

Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) today announced that Nassau County has entered into a new intermunicipal agreement with the City of Glen Cove and the Village of Sea Cliff that would widen and improve the roadways in and around the intersection of Sea Cliff Avenue and Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Cove. The changes will address vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle safety issues.

The current intersection is significantly offset resulting in inefficient movement of traffic and a poor level of service to vehicle and pedestrians.  The intersection and surrounding roadways also have narrow travel lanes, narrow on-street parking stalls, a lack of dedicated turn lanes, an absence of ADA compliant sidewalk ramps, and inefficient line striping.

“It is to the benefit of our taxpayers that the County share resources with other municipalities to undertake local projects, such as this one, that benefit the entire community,” said Legislator Yatauro. “I am pleased that we were able to collaborate to cure this tricky intersection that has been a major cause for concern for so many local residents.”

Among the improvements being made, Sea Cliff Avenue will be realigned to have it line up across Glen Cove Avenue to eliminate the offset; a new traffic signal infrastructure will be installed with a new signal operation; northbound and southbound left turn lanes will be installed on Glen Cove Avenue; cut outs for on-street parking will be provided on Glen Cove Avenue; and decorative crosswalks will be installed.  The project is also being funding in part by the New York State Department of Transportation.

According to many of the local business patrons and business owners located along this 200-foot section of Glen Cove Avenue, crossing the street is extremely difficult due to the lack of crosswalk markings, offset intersecting streets, and high traffic volumes.  On-street parking on Glen Cove Avenue is often dangerous to motorists when exiting or entering parked cars because of the narrow travel and parking lanes and the lack of distinct pavement markings.

“During my first month in office I met with Sea Cliff Mayor Eileen Krieb and her team,” said City of Glen Cove Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi. “Mayor Krieb wanted to bring me up to speed on this very important project, and it is just one of many mutual and inter-municipal projects occurring between our communities.”

"It's very satisfying when municipalities join together to improve conditions for their residents," said Sea Cliff Mayor, Eileen Krieb. "Glen Cove and Nassau County have been great to work with. We're also grateful to the New York State Department of Transportation for providing major funding for this project."

“This intersection has long been a troublesome one for our residents,” said Legislator Yatauro.  “We wanted to improve the traffic flow at this intersection to make it safer for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.”
