| May 04, 2004 Yatauro assists police in apprehension of 'Video' Criminals
Mineola, NY -Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) found herself in the middle of a scene from "COPS" last week when she stopped by her favorite market to get a cold drink. Yatauro was parked in the Olive Market lot on Glen Head Road when suddenly she heard the screech of tires next to her as a car hurriedly pulled into the parking space. "I looked over and noticed three men jump out and throw a large duffle bag onto the pavement," she said. "It seemed unusual and peaked my curiosity." What she didn't know at the time was that these three men were suspects in a series of larcenies at several video stores in the area. As police sirens roared in the distance, one man jumped back into the car and tried to leave as the other two men ran. Legislator Yatauro had to think quickly. She called 911, and then attempted to block the other car with her truck. The suspect was persistent however, and jumped the curb with his car. He later crashed at Glenwood Road and Shore Road and was apprehended by police. A nearby employee of Meineke Muffler held one of the other suspects at bay, until police arrived. Old Brookville Police eventually arrested the two suspects. "It was quite a scene, with a police helicopter hovering over head and canine units and numerous police cars," she said. Not her usual day at the office, she did however manage to protect the evidence (video tapes, DVD's and video games) until police could take it into custody. Arrested were Jason Figueroa, 19 of Eastfield Road, of Westbury; the other two males are juveniles and their names are not being released. |
