Legislator Dave Denenberg Honors 2010 Women Trailblazers
Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) presented the 2010 Nassau County Legislature’s Trailblazer Award to Susan Cirigliano of Bellmore and Michele Witte of Merrick, two courageous women who turned tragedy into triumph. Because of a tremendous effort on their part, they began a grass roots campaign to educate various organizations, government agencies, manufacturers and elected officials about the dangers associated with drop-side cribs. Legislator Denenberg led the way in Nassau County and, with Susan and Michele at his side, he sponsored the legislation approved by the Legislature which bans the sale of drop-side cribs. Nassau County is one of the first counties nationwide to do so.
Legislator Denenberg said, “Susan and Michele each suffered a grievous loss no parent should ever experience—the death of their infant sons. Bobby Cirigliano and Tyler Jonathan Witte were tucked away in the comfort and safety of their own homes when, tragically, they became fatal victims of a defective design in drop-side cribs. Despite this horror, Michele and Susan somehow are turning unspeakable tragedy into triumph.”
State and federal officials are considering statewide and national bans of drop-side cribs, thanks to a tremendous, emotional undertaking of two courageous mothers.
