Legislator Denenberg Proposes Law Requiring Calorie Listings on Menus
Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) is co-sponsoring a proposed law requiring that the caloric content of food be posted by certain food establishments in Nassau County. The bill, if passed, will require food service establishments, which are “one of a group of 15 or more such establishments doing business nationally and operating under common ownership or control” (i.e. franchise outlets), to post calorie information on all menu boards and menus.
Legislators Denenberg joined Toback held a press conference at the Nickerson Beach Dover Caterers concession stand where owner Butch Yamali, of Merrick, is voluntarily listing the calorie contents on a menu board.
“An informed consumer is a smart consumer,” Legislator Denenberg said. “Legislator Toback saw that this was working in the city and rightly believed that there is no reason why the people in Nassau County shouldn’t have the same protection. This law is about all of us being healthy, particularly our youth.”
