Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi announced that the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve in Glen Cove is offering a mix of children’s programs during the Presidents week school break, as follows:

Native American Games & Legends, Feb. 19, 10 a.m. – noon, 1 - 3 p.m. Although their everyday lives may seem austere by contemporary standards, centuries ago Native Americans spent hours on recreational pursuits, including children’s games that were also designed to sharpen critical skills, such as the hand-eye coordination needed for hunting. During this program, attendees will learn to play games that were popular with tribes across the country, many reminiscent of contemporary children’s games.

Natural & Native American Crafts for Children, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Attendees to this program can create such crafts as a wampum necklace, a wigwam or mock birch basket made of paper, and pine cone animals. Children can also decode a secret message written in Native American pictographs and learn to write their own picture story.

Rock, Mineral & Fossil Identification Day, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  This program provides children with the opportunity to bring in rocks and minerals and have resident geologist George Allgaier identify them. Children can also look at their rocks and minerals under a stereoscope. In addition, attendees can take the time to view the museum’s newest geology-themed exhibit, “Crystals!!” as well as the “Birthstone of the Month.”

Films and Videos, Feb. 19 - 24.  The museum will run a series of videos about science topics and Native Americans, including children’s favorites such as “Paddle to the Sea,” based on the classic story (Feb. 20).

The Garvies Point Museum and beautiful adjoining 62-acre preserve are located along Hempstead Harbor at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove. Admission to the museum is $2 for adults and $1 for those 4 to 14 (those under four years of age are admitted free). For additional information, call 516-571-8010.
