New Farmer's Market Opens at Christopher Morley Park

As part of his ongoing "Healthy Nassau" campaign, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi announced that starting June 4, a farmer's market will open at Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills to complement the existing one in Garden City at 101 County Seat Drive.

The market in Christopher Morley Park will be open Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will remain open through November 26. The market in Garden City operates on Tuesdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November 25.

Both markets offer fresh produce, including vegetables, fruits, juices, honey, jams, jellies pickles, pies, and breads. Approximately eight to 12 vendors are expected to sell goods at the weekly markets.

"Last year’s farmer’s market was a huge success and I’m excited that Nassau County will now host two farmer’s markets,” said Suozzi. "Farmer’s market customers will enjoy fresh food, straight from the farm, without having to travel a great distance.”

The Nassau County Attorney’s office and the County’s Department of Senior Citizen Affairs worked with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Farmer’s Market Federation of New York, and the Long Island Grower’s Market to create both markets.

To encourage seniors to take advantage of the markets, the County’s Department of Senior Citizen Affairs will distribute vouchers provided through a State program designed to help qualifying seniors make purchases at the market.

Healthy Nassau, County Executive Suozzi's campaign to make Nassau the healthiest county in the nation, builds upon existing initiatives and adds new ones in order to sustain a healthy environment (focusing on air, land and water), while encouraging healthy living (tending to bodies, minds and spirits).

Healthy Nassau initiatives have included creating the organic farm at Old Bethpage Village Restoration; initiating the “Biggest Loser” Weight-Off Competition for County workers; continuing to preserve the County's remaining open space; seeding 2 million shellfish in Hempstead Harbor; requesting the Health Department to consider banning trans fats and putting calorie counts on menus; and working with other large municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Christopher Morley Park is located on Searingtown Road (Exit 36 north of the L.I.E). The beauitful and hilly 98-acre park includes a large playground; basketball, handball and tennis courts; baseball fields; a nine-hole golf course; a fitness trail and nature trails in the woods; an ice-skating rink; and a basin for model-boat enthusiasts.
