County Executive Suozzi Introduces New Fitness Trail in Wantagh Park
County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi has unveiled the County’s third fitness trail, located in Wantagh Park. The 2-mile trail joins similar trails that have been installed during the past year at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow and Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills.
The trail, which begins near the entrance to Wantagh Park and winds around the park before ending by the marina, provides 20 attractive and simple fitness stations that incorporate a variety of exercises, such as stretching, pull-ups, sit-ups and balance walking. Each station has posted instructions that include additional information, including target heart beat guide.
The cost of the stations was underwritten by the Nassau County Sports Commission and installation was done by volunteers from Deloitte Tax LLP on Long Island. The low-maintenance fitness stations are made of a mix of treated Southern yellow pine timbers and steel tubing.
“In keeping with my ‘Healthy Nassau’ initiative, we are continuing to add fitness stations to our parks that provide residents with a structured and accessible exercise regimen,” said Suozzi. “The Wantagh Park fitness trail offer residents one more reason to come out to this beautiful park and get fit.”
The Healthy Nassau initiative is designed to make Nassau County the healthiest county in the nation. Healthy Nassau programs have included creating the organic farm at Old Bethpage Village Restoration; initiating the “Biggest Loser” Weight-Off Competition for County workers; continuing to preserve the County's remaining open space; seeding 2 million shellfish in Hempstead Harbor; requesting the Health Department to consider banning trans fats and placing calorie counts on menus; and working with other large municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A scenic 111-acre park bordered on the south by Flat Creek with East Bay beyond, Wantagh has a range of attractions, from a swimming complex to athletic fields and tennis courts to a boating marina and launch ramp.
