Garvies Point Museum Presents Films About Native American Women, as Part of Women's History Month

As part of the celebration of Women’s History Month, the Garvies Point Museum in Glen Cove is featuring four films in March about Native American women, announced Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. The films will be shown at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

“The Journey of Sacagawea” (March 2) is a 50-minute film exploring the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. Told through the oral history of the Shoshoni, Hidatsa, and the Nez Perce tribes, this beautiful account gives insight to the enigmatic history of one of the nation's best-known heroines and includes accounts from the Lewis and Clark journals.

“Kiowa Cradleboard Maker: The Art and Tradition of Vanessa Jennings” (March 5). This 30-minute film shows the role of Kiowa cradleboards as designed by Vanessa Jennings. Lovingly crafted from wood and rawhide, often completely covered with beadwork and decorated with keepsakes, these lavish works of art link families and generations.

“Helen Hardin: Santa Clara Painter” (March 19). The abstract geometric paintings of Helen Hardin are depicted in this 29-minute film, which describes the artist's struggle to convey aspects of her native heritage, while departing from the Santa Fe/Dorothy Dunn model of her predecessors (including her mother, acclaimed artist Palate Velarde).

“Grace Medicine Flower and Joseph Lone Wolf, Santa Clara Potters” (March 26). This 29-minute film examines the pottery of Grace Medicine Flower and her brother, Joseph Lone Wolf, members of the renowned Tafoya family of Santa Clara Pueblo. Works feature abstract designs, “sgraffito” and polychrome techniques.

The Garvies Point Museum and beautiful adjoining 62-acre preserve are located at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove by Hempstead Harbor. Admission to the museum is $3 for adults and $2 for children 5 to 12 (those under 5 years of age are admitted free when accompanied by a parent). The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information about the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, call 516-571-8010.
