The Garvies Point Museum and Preserve in Glen Cove will present a comprehensive program of hands-on activities, lectures and a film as part of the commemoration of World Water Day, on Saturday, March 20, announced Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.
The program will begin at 11 a.m. with a cleanup of the waterways on the beautiful 62-acre Garvies Point Preserve, located on Hempstead Harbor. As part of that effort, a lecturer will discuss how water quality impacts the ecosystem and the plant and animal life that relies on pond water.
At noon, the museum will present a participatory stream-table demonstration and lecture, “Understanding Erosion: How Water Sculpts the Land,” followed at 1 p.m. by a lecture from geology curator George Allgaier, “Long Island Geology: How the Island was Formed.” Allgaier will review the glacial events dating back millions of years that helped form the contemporary Long Island landscape.
At 2 p.m., Brian Zimmerman of Nassau County Soil and Water will discuss the impact that humans have on water quality, as well as related topics about water treatment, health and technology. In addition, the museum will show a film, “Eyewitness: Ocean,” at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
World Water Day was created by the United Nations in 1992 and is observed annually throughout the world. Although World Water Day will be officially commemorated on Monday, March 22, Garvies Point is holding the event on the Saturday before to accommodate residents.
The Garvies Point Museum and the adjoining preserve are located at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove by Hempstead Harbor. Admission to the museum is $3 for adults and $2 for children 5 to 12 (those under 5 years of age are admitted free when accompanied by a parent). The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information about the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, call 516-571-8010.
