Cantiague Park Begins Fall Skating Lessons "Open" Registration

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announces that “open” registration has begun for fall 2010 ice skating classes at Cantiague Park’s newly renovated indoor ice skating rink. Open registration, which runs through the start of classes in late September, is for patrons who did not participate in the spring 2010 classes.

Classes — in several age and skill levels, from “Tots” to “Alpha” and “Freestyle” — begin the third week of September and run through the second week of November 2010, depending on the class. The classes are formed with a minimum of four students and a maximum of 10 per class. The program consists of eight half-hour lessons for each age and skill level, with the various classes offered on Mondays and Fridays between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuition is $120 and skate rentals are available for $5 per rental.

Registration at the Cantiague rink will take place seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will continue until classes are filled. Classes are open only to Nassau County residents, and Leisure Passes are required (those under 13 years of age may use a parent’s Leisure Pass number). Checks can be made payable to “Treasurer of Nassau County.”

In July, the County began a $400,000 renovation project at Cantiague’s rink that includes new boards and plexiglass partitions, new lighting, a new coat of paint for the stands and an improved drainage system. The work is scheduled for completion in mid-September.

Over the years, the rink has played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan and to the New York Islanders (National Hockey League. Ice skating sessions take place daily, and birthday parties may also be arranged during public sessions. For more information, call 516-571-7056.

Centrally located in Hicksville on West John Street, Cantiague Park provides a range of activities spread over 127 acres, including an executive-level nine-hole, par-30 golf course and driving range; tennis, handball and basketball courts; a new multipurpose turf field and additional athletic fields; a large playground; picnic areas; and an outdoor swimming pool complex.
