Historic Cedarmere Museum Offers Meditation Class in August

Cedarmere, the historic Roslyn home of prominent 19th-century poet and editor William Cullen Bryant, will offer two classes in relaxation meditation on August 11-12 (Saturday and Sunday), announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The classes will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The sessions, based on traditional Chinese practices, combine standing and seated meditation exercises and will be led by Francine Liu, who has 12 years of experience as a meditation instructor.

“The classes are designed to help participants find relief from stress and return to a state of tranquility,” says Cedarmere Director Harrison Hunt. “The beautiful setting of Cedarmere, where Bryant came to escape the noise and pressure of his job in New York City, is an especially appropriate setting for the lessons.”

The fee for the course is $90 payable to the “Friends of Nassau Recreation” on the first day of class. Participants, who do not need previous experience with meditation, are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, shoes and socks and to avoid a heavy breakfast before class. For more information or to reserve a place in the class, call 516-571-8130.

Cedarmere, operated by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, includes the Bryant home and several other structures on a beautiful 7-acre property overlooking Roslyn Harbor. Visitors can view the exhibits in the house and stroll on the property, which includes a pond spanned by a rustic stone bridge, a Gothic Revival Mill, and a small formal garden.

The property, which has been designated a part of the New York State Underground Railroad Heritage Trail, is located on Bryant Avenue west of Glen Cove Road.
