Nassau Hub

As its name suggests, the Hub is the geographic center of Nassau County - as well as the heart of its economy. Situated in the center of the County, the Hub includes the EAB Plaza, Nassau Coliseum and Eisenhower Park on the Southeast, and the Roosevelt Field and Source Malls to the North. It encompasses Nassau Community College, Hofstra University and Roosevelt Field, and travels as far west as the Nassau County Government offices in Mineola. Hempstead Village and Mineola, with their Long Island Rail Road lines, are also important parts of the Nassau Hub.

In June 2003, Nassau County embarked upon one of the most significant endeavors in recent history -- a Major Investment Study (MIS) of the Nassau Hub.  The MIS proposed new transportation options and land use strategies that can best meet future transportation and development need in this area by improving access and mobility, promoting economic development, and enhancing the quality of life. In recent years, traffic congestion has dramatically increased due to the high concentration of business and recreational activity in the Hub. If no action is taken, projections estimate traffic will increase 36% (from 480,000 "person trips" in and out of the Hub, to 650,000 a day over the next 10 years). This additional volume has the potential to bring Nassau County's economic engine to a halt – that is why redeveloping the Hub is so important.

The MIS was completed December 2005 and the Final Report was released March 2006.  Please click on the following link for a copy of this report: Hub MIS Final Report

The next phase of the Nassau Hub planning initiative will be the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and this is currently projected to begin in late 2008.
