Downtown Visioning
Nassau County's downtowns are centers of commerce and excitement, near LIRR stations and good transportation, and are walkable communities. These are the places where we can expand our tax base, get people out of their cars, and create jobs for young people, and housing for seniors and the next generation.
Nassau County's Downtown Visioning Program
In 2003, Nassau County began a series of town-hall meetings in 35 Economic Development Zones (EDZ) throughout Nassau County. Following an analysis of community imput from these meetings, the County began the Nassau County Downtown Visioning Program, a grants program to foster public participation and consensus building for local improvement projects that spur economic development. Nassau County has partnered with municipalities on Visioning Projects in various communities throughout the County.
Already three communities have vision plans for the revitalization of their downtowns that are currently being implemented (click for a link to more information):
Four additional communities have visioning programs underway ( as of January 2010):
Other communities hope to begin the visioning process in the near term:
Town of Oyster Bay:
Hicksville
Town of Hempstead:
Inwood
Baldwin
Roosevelt
Uniondale
