Motor Parkway Trail Project

Motor Parkway Trail Project

The Nassau County Department of Public works is heading a visioning process to provide the framework to redevelop portions of the Long Island Motor Parkway as the "Motor Parkway Trail" for new recreational uses. This process will result in a plan that, when implemented, will provide an important recreational connection through Nassau County for hikers and bicyclists.

Project Background

History does have a way of repeating itself...
The Long Island Motor Parkway was originally built to provide a form of recreation for William K. Vanderbilt Jr., who wanted a landscaped parkway to drive and race his vehicles. It also provided an important vehicular connection from Queens through Nassau County to Suffolk County. Similar issues are driving the current initiative to create the Motor Parkway Trail, but on a different scale.
