The City of Glen Cove receives funding from the NASSAU COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING to provide a congregate nutrition program as well as supportive services such as transportation, recreation, information, referral, and shopping assistance at the Glen Cove Senior Community Service Center. In addition, it operates an Adult Day Care program for frail elderly in a supervised setting. Call 759-2345.

The City of Long Beach is a seaside community with local transportation service. A discounted senior citizen fare enables convenient access to shopping and local activities. A nine member Advisory Board for Aging is appointed to inform the Administration about residents’ concerns and to enhance the quality of life for older persons.

The Long Beach Recreation Department provides assistance and support to local senior citizen clubs expanding their ability to provide additional activities and enhancing their programs. Special rates are available to senior citizens for use of the ocean beach park during the summer season and at the indoor swimming pool year round. For more information, call: (516) 431-3890

The Center’s programs run throughout the year and include a walking and exercise program, Tai Chi, beginner’s and intermediate bridge classes, dance therapy, and art classes. Additional classes and trips are being planned.

The Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment provides services for 16 Senior Citizen Centers and 136 Clubs. Educational, cultural, nutritional, health oriented, recreational and intergenerational programs, sports activities, and a 10-week Summer Beach Program at Lido Beach Town Park are available. The Department offers a self-sustaining nutrition program and a health program consisting of services, education, and counseling. The HATS program (Home Aides to Seniors) links a pool of companion aides, who have attended workshops by the Town of Hempstead, to assist with the frail and elderly. A Senior Day Care Program meets the needs of at-risk elderly and provides socialization as well as emotional support for the participants. Free transportation to and from clubs and centers, and for shopping and banking, is provided by the Department’s transportation unit.

The Town of North Hempstead’s programs for aging offer information and referral services to North Hempstead residents 60 years of age and older. The Town’s Senior Citizen Identification Card enables seniors to take advantage of discounts at Town facilities, local merchants, and adult education courses.

Town buses provide weekly door-to-door grocery shopping, monthly trips to Roosevelt Field, and transportation for senior club outings, luncheons, and special trips. The handicapped accessible buses are primarily used for the frail elderly day care programs. In addition, the Town contracts for additional buses to transport seniors to their club meetings. The Monday Funday program at Bar Beach runs for eight weeks in July and August and offers entertainment and refreshments as well as free bus transportation. A February Fun Day brunch is held indoors in the winter.

Project Independence is a special initiative in the Town. Its mission is to assist and enable aging residents to remain in their homes for as long as possible by coordinating available resources to meet their needs.

Seniors in the Town of Oyster Bay, age 60 and over, enjoy a wide variety of social/recreational programs provided by the Town and independently sponsored senior citizen clubs. Services within the clubs include arts, crafts, painting, ballroom and line dancing, day trips and special club events. Special programming includes day trips open to all Town seniors. A summer program, held at the Glen Head Community Center and facilities at Tappen Beach in Bayville, with transportation provided by the Town, runs for seven weeks in July and August.
