A Message from the Chairman

You Can be Successful Filing Your Own Tax Appeal

In the coming weeks you will receive many solicitations from tax representatives who will encourage you to retain them to file an appeal of your assessment. I want to assure you that it is not necessary to sign-up with a representative in order to be successful in having your assessment reduced. In fact, our statistics show that homeowners who represented themselves were as likely to have their assessment reduced by ARC as those who used a tax representative.

It is also important to know that the Department of Assessment has not yet determined the value of your property for the upcoming tentative assessment roll which will be published on January 2, 2009. Until then no one can predict if your appeal will be successful. Once the tentative roll is published you can use our website to predict the success of your own appeal.

The most convenient way to determine whether or not you should file an appeal is to take advantage of ARC’s on-line appeal system called AROW- Assessment Review On the Web . Through the “Sales Locator” feature in AROW you can do an automated search of recent sales in your area and determine whether or not your home is overvalued. The “Sales Locator” feature is available to you at anytime, and during the upcoming filing period of January 2, 2009 – March 2, 2009, it will also advise you of the  likelihood of the success of your appeal.

If, after utilizing the “Sales Locator” feature, you believe the valuation of your property is excessive, I would encourage you to use AROW to file an application for correction of assessment. Using AROW is free and, if your appeal is successful, you keep all the tax savings. Don’t be hesitant to use AROW, the only expertise required is to answer questions about your property on the application.

We are always happy to assist you so please contact us by phone at 516 571 - 3214 or by email at ARC@nassaucountyny.gov with any questions. We will also be doing community outreach forums in the coming month’s to demonstrate the features of AROW. Please check our website periodically for more information.

Sincerely,

John Peguillan,Chairman
