Food drive by Comptroller Weitzman yields generous donations to several local food pantries & shelters in Nassau
Local supermarkets help to feed needy
A recent food drive by Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman and his staff yielded generous donations from area supermarkets enabling Weitzman’s office to deliver more than 20 turkeys and $275 in non-perishable food to local food pantries and homeless shelters in Nassau.
"Even in these times of tight purse strings, it’s very heartening to see that local merchants are still very generous with their donations,” Comptroller Howard Weitzman said.
The beneficiaries of the food drive include the Mary Brennan Inn located in Hempstead and Island Harvest.
During the three week food drive, the Comptroller’s office was able to collect gift cards, turkeys and generous donations from many local supermarkets.
"We are very grateful for Comptroller Weitzman’s donations to The INN and our efforts to meet the needs of hungry and homeless Long Islanders,” said The INN’s Director of Communications Cynthia Sucich. “Last year, during the holiday season, The Inn distributed more than 4,400 turkeys to families and individuals requesting assistance. We are anticipating the need to be much more this year, and are confident that we will be able to meet this need with the generosity of people like Comptroller Weitzman.”
The Mary Brennan INN is open all year to Nassau’s neediest families and provides them with warm meals, shelter, and supportive services. The INN is located at 100 Madison Avenue in Hempstead and accepts donations all year long. You can visit them on the web at www.the-inn.org or call them at 516-486-8506.
Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island, and Long Island Cares, the food bank and hunger assistance organization since 1980, both will also be receiving donations from the Comptroller’s office as well.
