Suozzi Convenes Committee to Find New Nassau County

Police Commissioner

Mineola, N.Y. – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi today announced that he has convened an internal committee to conduct a search for a new Nassau County police commissioner. The current commissioner, James H. Lawrence, has announced that he is retiring at the end of June.

“This committee is launching a search for qualified candidates to lead this first-rate, dedicated police department into the future,” Suozzi said. “Nassau County provides one of the most sophisticated public safety organizations in the nation, and we have the lowest crime rate of any municipality our size in the nation to prove it. We need a commissioner who can build on that success, and who is ready to lead the department to face the challenges of the 21st Century.”

Nassau County, which has a population of 1.3 million residents, fields one of the most sophisticated and well respected police forces in the nation. During the Suozzi administration, the department has used technology to increase crime fighting capabilities and improve efficiency, including a state-of-the-art intelligence center, a new Police Academy, placement of GPS units in all marked police cars and the implementation of the NASS-STAT performance measurement tool which critically analyzes crime patterns and develops effective and cost efficient initiatives to improve public safety in Nassau County.

The search committee, which includes Nassau County Chief Deputy County Executive John Donnelly, Deputy County Executive for Public Safety Timothy Driscoll and Director of Human Resources Jo-Ann Goldson, will consider candidates with extensive public safety experience. The committee is welcoming submissions from candidates who are currently in the Nassau County Police Department, as well as those from elsewhere.

After identifying the strongest candidates, the committee will present a list to Suozzi, who will make the final decision. Candidates should submit their resumes by close of business on May 21st. A new commissioner is expected to be identified by June 30.

Interested candidates – both external and internal - should email their resumes to khuber@nassaucountyny.gov. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
