Tomorrow Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi will announce the renaming of the Old Nassau County Courthouse on Franklin Avenue in Mineola, as the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building.
"With the former President being Nassau County's most famous citizen, it is only appropriate that we rename this building in his honor," the County Executive said. "In addition, this ceremony is taking place 102 years to the day when the New York State Governor, Theodore Roosevelt, helped lay the corner stone."
In keeping with the historical tradition of the building, there will be a program to reflect the building's past, and the significance of Theodore Roosevelt. The event will run from 4 pm- 7pm, with the official ceremony starting at 5 pm.
Some of the highlights of the day's events include a museum tent exhibiting artifacts from Sagamore Hill, the Nassau County archives, and the Long Island Studies Institute at Hofstra University. There will be autographed photographs, contents of the original cornerstone, a rare collection of Teddy Bears, and the 45-star flag among other items. Jim Foote, the Teddy Roosevelt Re-creationist will be on hand to deliver the speech that Teddy Roosevelt made the day he laid the original cornerstone, and Jonathon Roosevelt, a great-great grandson of the President will also be present, and will speak about the former President's commitment to Nassau County.
This special event is also the first ever County Employee Picnic. The County Executive will take this opportunity to thank the employees for their hard work and patience while Nassau County goes from the worst county in the country to the best. In addition to the hundreds of employees, the major private donors who have made this renovation possible will be in attendance at the picnic.
