The Health Department requests that residents limit water use to the absolute minimum and refrain from watering lawns. Elderly and infirm residents are at the greatest risk for heat stroke and should keep windows open, drink plenty of liquids and use damp towels to keep themselves cool.
County Executive Suozzi is also asking all residents to conserve energy by turning off all non-essential appliances and reasonably limit the use of electricity.
"This is the largest power outage in our Nation’s history and LIPA has requested that we conserve energy as the power grid is brought back online," said Suozzi. "Temperatures are expected to soar today and energy demand will pressure the system. We must avoid unnecessary use of electricity. We will operate government buildings on minimal power with essential personnel only," he added.
Most traffic signals have been restored but residents should be cautious when driving through intersections as many traffic signals still have to be properly set in order to regulate the flow of traffic. In addition, it would be advisable to refrain from driving if at all possible.
All non-essential County employees are being asked to work from home today, however, Parks personnel should report to work today. County Employees should contact their direct supervisor or department head with any questions.
All county parks are open today with the exception of Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay, Garvies Point in Glen Cove, the Nassau County Rifle Range at Mitchell Park and Tackapausha Preserve in Massapequa. The fees for all County parks, pools, beaches and museums are waived for the day but that does not include the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The Long Island Classic at Eisenhower Park is scheduled to continue and began this morning.
