Suozzi Announces Completed Safety Measures At One of Nassau’s Worst Intersections
New Hyde Park, NY – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, joined by Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Legislator Lisanne Altmann (D-Great Neck), today announced that the County has spent nearly $2 million toward the re-alignment of the intersection of Marcus, Denton and Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park. The completion of this project marks another significant capital project advancement for the County.

“This intersection has long been one of the most troublesome intersections in Nassau County,” said County Executive Suozzi. “We wanted to improve the traffic flow at this intersection to make it safer for the local residents, motorists and pedestrians. The neighborhood surrounding this intersection has long been concerned about this area and we are happy we were able to greatly improve the safety and flow of vehicles through this major intersection.”
“This has been a dangerous intersection for years,” added Supervisor Kaiman. “I would like to thank the County Executive and the County Legislature for hearing the concerns of the community and taking action.”
"Congratulations to the Administration for completing this long awaited project. Many of my constituents drive to and from work every day on this busy intersection, in fact I do myself. Finally, we have a safe intersection that allows all of us to get to work and home safely and quickly,” said Legislator Altmann.
The capital project’s improvements were started in June 2004 by the Nassau County Department of Public Works and were completed earlier this year. Approximately $2 million was spent on the design and construction of this capital project which brought the project in under its original budget of $2.3 million. In addition to the re-alignment of Marcus and Denton Avenues, the improvements include installation of a traffic signal on Marcus Avenue (south of Hillside Avenue) that will control northbound vehicles from Denton Avenue.
Previously, vehicles traveling on Denton Ave towards Hillside had to cross through Marcus Avenue while avoiding two-way traffic. The re-alignment of these two avenues coupled with the installation of a traffic light on Marcus Ave has greatly improved the safety of this intersection. By sequencing the traffic signal on Hillside Avenue with the newly installed signal on Marcus Avenue it is much easier for the flow of vehicles to navigate through this intersection.
