Mineola, NY-- With home heating oil topping $3.50 a gallon, it was almost like hitting the lottery, as Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi announced the first of 50 Levittown residents to receive free Intellidyne controls that will reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent or, on average, $350 a year.

“With energy prices at unprecedented highs, it has never made more sense to invest in energy efficiency. Our message to homeowners and businesses is to start saving money now,” said Suozzi. “Install an energy saving device, replace your old boiler, upgrade insulation and windows, switch to energy efficient light bulbs, and try new technologies like solar heaters and biofuels. GreenLevittown partners are stepping up to offer givaways, great discounts, utility rebates, and low-interest financing. It has never been so easy to go green.”

The giveaway is part of Suozzi’s GreenLevittown program, designed to turn America’s first suburb in the first green suburb and to reduce Levittown’s carbon footprint by 10 percent this year. Today, Suozzi showcased the IntelliCon HW+ controller from Intellidyne, an inexpensive control that works with an oil or gas burner and modifies the burner cycle to use less fuel without compromising performance or comfort.

Intellidyne guarantees that its control will reduce fuel consumption by at least 10 percent, while reducing pollution from oil burners by almost half. Intellidyne is contributing the free units to create local success stories. The controls will be made available to others in Levittown at the discounted price of $399. If 10 percent of Levittown homes adopted the Intellidyne technology there would be a collective annual savings of $600,000 and 175,000 gallons of fuel oil, and a 1 percent reduction in the residential carbon footprint.

Mike Ruff, COO of Intellidyne, said that he was “delighted to be a partner in this all-out effort,” and that he was “confident that the IntelliCon controller would go a long way to helping achieve Mr. Suozzi’s goal for Levittown.”

GreenLevittown is the first public-private partnership in America designed to reduce pollution. In addition to Intellidyne, Suozzi has fielded a team of local companies including LIPA, Keyspan, P.C. Richard, Alure Home Improvement, Satco Lighting, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Tragar Oil Company and Earthkind Energy to offer its products and services at reduced costs and at very low financing rates to make saving energy and going green affordable.

Beginning next week, the advocacy group Citizens Campaign for the Environment will begin calling on all 17,000 Levittown homes to bring homeowners information on saving energy. Later in the month, Suozzi will speak at all Island Trees elementary schools, aiming to bring the energy-saving message home through the children. A new website, GreenLevittown.com, will bring homeowners information about saving money, highlighting success stories and helping to create a green online community. In March, Suozzi will host a Green Party in Levittown. And in April, around Earth Day, more than 20,000 high-efficiency fluorescent light bulbs will be given away in Levittown.
