Glow of Hope
Suozzi to Launch Breast Cancer Awareness Month

with Annual “Pink Glow of Hope”

Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi will be joined by Geri Barish, Executive Director of Hewlett House and President of “1 in 9"  Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition,” and Abraham Port, M.D. of South Nassau Communities Hospital’s  Complete Women’s Imaging to host a ceremony on Friday, October 3 to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Nassau County.

The program will be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building and will include remarks by County Executive Suozzi, Mrs. Barish and Dr. Port, musical selections and a “Salute to Breast Cancer Survivors.”  When there is sufficient darkness, all in attendance will gather outside for the official “Pink Illumination” of the Building’s dome.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an initiative to increase awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection.  “This event’s focus is one of encouragement to women to take charge of their health by practicing regular self-breast exams, scheduling an annual mammogram, adhering to prescribed treatments and staying current with the facts about breast cancer and its recurrence,” noted Mrs. Barish.

“This event is a salute to breast cancer survivors and a mandate for all of us to carry the message of the importance of early detection, not only this month but throughout the year,” said County Executive Suozzi.

The pink illumination will remain throughout the month of October, joining such world landmarks as the Empire State Building, Niagara Falls and the Panama Canal, to pay tribute to all breast cancer victims, survivors and their families.

Guests are invited to arrive at 5:00 p.m. for light refreshments, followed by a brief program in the Ceremonial Chambers.  The illumination will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m.  All are invited to attend.
