DA Announces Auction of 59 Seized Vehicles

Luxury sedans, motorcycles, and SUVs available for purchase; proceeds fund law enforcement initiatives

MINEOLA – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that 59 vehicles that were seized by the Nassau County Police Department will be auctioned off to the highest bidder on Wednesday, May 20 at the Nassau County Police Impound Yard in Bethpage.

Of the vehicles seized, 27 were seized from DWI offenders, 16 from those convicted of drug charges, six from defendants convicted of burglary and robbery, and one each from defendants convicted of murder, manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, criminal sexual act, grand larceny, criminal mischief, forgery, hindering prosecution, and attempted robbery.

The auction includes:

  • A 1999 Mercedes-Benz that was owned by a defendant convicted of buying more than $2,500 worth of merchandise at Bloomingdale’s with counterfeit $50 bills.
  • A 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle whose owner was sentenced to six months in jail after his drunk and reckless driving caused the death of a passenger riding on the back of another motorcycle.
  • A 1999 Honda Civic used as the getaway vehicle in a home burglary.
  • A 2004 Yamaha ATV whose owner was sentenced to six months in jail for drunkenly driving the unregistered, uninsured and uninspected ATV without a helmet on a public highway.

Rice said that the auction is being run by Buffalo-based Auctions International. Proceeds from the auction will go to the DA’s Forfeiture Fund. That money is put back into the community through crime-reduction programs and investigations.

“We aggressively investigate and prosecute crime, and when it’s all over, we go after the criminals’ proceeds,” Rice said. “We make sure crime doesn’t pay, and that the criminals are the people picking up the tab.”
