Five More Nassau Schools to Get the CRASH! Driver Education Program
Rice says program teaches new drivers, through physics, the causes and real-life consequences of vehicle crashes
MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice today that her office has won a $2,500 grant that will provide five more Nassau County high schools with CRASH! training kits. The program uses physics and math to explain the real-life consequences of car crashes, and how young drivers can avoid them. The grant funding is provided by Allstate.
The five schools that will be receiving the kits are Plainedge, Lynbrook, Manhasset, North Shore Hebrew Academy in Great Neck and Holy Trinity in Hicksville.
Started by nationally acclaimed physics professor and collision reconstructionist John Kwasnoski, the program teaches young drivers how something as simple as looking at their iPod could leave a driver distracted for nearly 500 feet of roadway. The program is already in place at high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Levittown, Glen Cove, Herricks, Hicksville, Bellmore-Merrick, Valley Stream, Port Washington, Oceanside and Massapequa.
“With the drunk driving epidemic on Long Island and the sheer number of motorists on the road at any one time, it is essential that our youngest drivers get every piece of instruction they can get,” Rice said. “The CRASH! program leads to fewer distractions, less mistakes, and less dangers on the roadway for all of us. I want to thank Allstate for recognizing the value of programs like this.”
