Former Long Island Attorney Charged With Stealing $18K in Taxpayer Money
Hill failed to remit employee’s taxes for six straight years
MINEOLA, NY - Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that a former Long Island attorney has been charged with grand larceny after failing to submit more than $18,000 of his employee’s state income tax withholdings.
Stephen Hill, 69, of Nevada, was arrested this morning by DA Investigators and charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Nassau County Court.
Rice said that from 2000 to 2005, Hill was the principal of Hill & Associates, a law firm with offices in Uniondale and then Hempstead. During that time, Hill collected New York State withholding tax totaling $18,346 from one of his employees. Instead of remitting that tax revenue to the state, however, Hill stole the money.
The theft was discovered and referred to the Nassau County DA’s Office by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
“This defendant abused his position of authority to line his own pockets and steal from honest New York taxpayers,” Rice said. “In addition to prosecuting him for his crime, my office will work to ensure that every dime he stole is repaid to the people of New York. I want to thank the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for bringing this case to our attention.”
Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Glicksman of the Economic Crimes Bureau is handling the case for the District Attorney's Office. Hill is represented by Donald Rizzuto, Esq.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
