Statement of District Attorneys Association President Kathleen M. Rice Welcoming New Legislation Making the Assault of a Prosecutor a Felony

“In our work to protect the public, prosecutors often face threats, harassment and sometimes even violent retaliation. The law rightly provides for harsher penalties for the assault of judges, police officers, firefighters, nurses, and others who protect the public. Until now, the law provided no such penalties for the assault of a prosecutor. I applaud the legislature and Governor Cuomo for recognizing the dangerous jobs that prosecutors throughout New York do every day to keep our communities safe, and on behalf of New York’s district attorneys, I thank them for making the assault of a prosecutor a felony offense.”
