Employment Opportunities

The Nassau County Department of Social Services offers challenging positions with opportunities for professional growth to those who are seeking a career in the social services field.  Full-time positions provide starting salaries with annual salary increases, as well as excellent fringe benefits including health, dental and optical insurance.  Part-time positions providing an hourly salary may also be available.
Recruitment for positions is done in accordance with Civil Service Law.  Jobs are typically filled using a list of eligible candidates meeting minimum qualifications of training and/or experience, who have passed a Civil Service Examination for a specific title.  As they become available, exam announcements for the Department of Social Services positions are posted in various locations, including:

The job titles listed below are entry-level positions.  For each one you are interested in, you may receive an announcement and application when the examination is scheduled by sending the Nassau County Civil Service Commission a 4" x 9" (legal size) self-addressed, stamped envelope with 63 cents in postage.  Write the title on the outside of the back flap of the self-addressed envelope (separate envelope for each title).

Positions

Title:  Social Welfare Examiner
Training and Experience:
         1.  Completion of 60 credits at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or
         university;
-OR-
         2.  Graduation from high school and two years satisfactory experience examining, investigating, 
         or evaluating claims for assistance, veterans or unemployment benefits, insurance, or a similar
         program operating under established criteria for eligibility
Necessary Special Requirement:
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.
Starting Salary:  $24,928;  after 6 months of service, salary increases to $28,248;  after 1 year of service, salary increases to $36,728.
 

Title:  Caseworker

Training and Experience:
1.  Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered 
      college or university.
2.  No prior experience requirement
Necessary Special Requirement:
Possession of an appropriate class, valid New York State Driver's License.  Must have for use an operable automobile, for the purpose of transportation for visits to clients, or for County business.
Starting Salary:  $30,290;  after 6 months of service, salary increases to $34,329;   after 1 year of service, salary increases to $44,631
