With the hefty Federal tobacco tax increase going into effect today, April 1st, the Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents that they can get help kicking the smoking habit.
The Health Department’s tobacco cessation specialists are ready to help anyone interested in ending their tobacco habit. Quitting is easier with support, and smokers can find help by calling 516-227- 9424 weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
"The Nassau County Department of Health wants people to not smoke.” said Dr. Maria Torroella Carney, Commissioner of Health. “We want to discourage people from starting to smoke and we want to help residents to stop smoking. This will prevent chronic illness and help residents to live longer, healthier lives. We want those interested in quitting to call the Nassau County Department of Health. We can help."
Residents also can call the New York Smokers’ Quitline at 1-866-NY QUITS (1-866-697-8487) to determine their medical eligibility and receive support with resources for their quit plans. The Quitline is available weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or on the state’s website at www.smokefree.com
The new Federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes on every pack of cigarettes rose from 39 cents to $1.01. The 62-cent rise was part of the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan law that was signed by President Obama on February 4th.
