Take the Test – Take Control
June 27th HIV Awareness Day
Friday, June 27th, is HIV Awareness Day. This day, especially, encourages at-risk individuals to get voluntary HIV counseling and testing.
The Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents of the importance of HIV testing to prevent its spread and to help get infected persons into treatment. Twenty seven years into the HIV epidemic, people are still becoming infected. In recognition of HIV Awareness Day, the Nassau County Department of Health will extend its counseling and testing days to include Monday, June 23rd through Thursday June 26th. For an appointment, please call the Nassau County Department of Health at 227-9423 or for anonymous testing, please call the New York State Department of Health at 1-800-462-6786.
“Remember, there is still no cure for HIV/AIDS,” said Dr. Maria Carney, Nassau County Commissioner of Health. “By knowing your status, you not only help yourself have a better quality of life and live longer, but also it means you can help keep your loved ones safe.”
The CDC estimates that by the end of 2003, between 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24%-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection.
According to the New York State Department of Health HIV/AIDS Annual Surveillance Report, in Nassau County, as of December 2005, there were:
- 853 persons living with HIV, and 1,719 living with AIDS.
- 118 newly diagnosed HIV and 109 AIDS cases
- 4,041 cumulative AIDS Diagnoses
As of December 2005, of the following New York State residents (excluding NYC and prisoners) there were:
- 584 males newly diagnosed AIDS cases
- 20,148 cumulative AIDS cases for males
- 279 females newly diagnosed AIDS cases
- 6,934 cumulative AIDS cases for females
HIV and AIDS can be spread every day of the year. It is far better to take the test and take control of your life.
