West Nile Virus Update for September 17, 2008
Probable Human Case
The New York State Department of Health has reported that an additional Nassau County resident has been diagnosed as a probable case of West Nile virus in Nassau County, New York.
This individual is a 79-year old male who resides in North Massapequa. His symptoms include fever, headache, and mental status changes. He became ill on September 10th and was hospitalized on September 11th. As of September 17, he has not been discharged.
To date fifty-seven (57) mosquito pools and three (3) birds tested positive for WNV. Including the individual described above, fourteen (14) humans have tested positive for West Nile virus in Nassau County in 2008. Three of these cases have resulted in death. No horses have tested positive.
The Department of Public Works (DPW), Mosquito Control unit is conducting additional surveillance in those areas where positive humans and positive mosquito pools have been found by inspecting breeding sites, and when necessary, applying larvicide.
The Health Department will continue mosquito surveillance at 42 trap sites located throughout the county.

To report a dead bird, please phone either the toll-free state hot line at 1-866-537-2473, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM or the Nassau County Health Department at 572-1211, Monday through Friday from 7:45AM to 3:30PM. Please be advised that we are no longer collecting dead birds.
