November 20th - The Great American Smokeout Day
A Perfect Time to Quit!
Today, Thursday, November 20th, over 10 million Americans are expected to participate in the Great American Smokeout by smoking less or quitting. Each year, on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society (ACS) organizes the Smokeout. According to ACS, more Americans try to quit smoking on this day than any other day of the year, including New Year’s Day.
Living tobacco-free has many health benefits, including reduced blood pressure, lower risk of heart attack and coronary disease, reduced chance of lung and throat cancer, clean lungs, and overall a better quality of life. Quitting is the first step to living a longer, healthier life. Smokers, who are trying to quit during the Great American Smokeout or any time, are encouraged to use any services available to increase their chances for success.
The Nassau County Department of Health is ready to help anyone interested in ending their tobacco habit. Quitting is easier with support, and smokers can find help by calling the Department's tobacco cessation specialists at (516) 227 - 9424.
