NOT TOO LATE FOR FLU SHOTS

In recognition of National Influenza Vaccination Week (December 8-14), the Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents that it is not too late to get a flu shot. Getting vaccinated is the single best way for people to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu.

Remember, an individual cannot get the flu from the flu shot.

The Nassau County Department of Health recommends that everyone should get vaccinated and encourages loved ones to get their flu shot today!

Each year in the United States, between 5 and 20 percent of the population is infected with influenza, about 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 individuals are hospitalized due to complications from influenza.  In Nassau County, with a population of nearly 1.4 million residents, this is equal to 280,000 residents being infected with the virus.

Since there is an adequate supply of the flu vaccine this year, no one should have difficulty getting a flu shot.

For additional information about influenza and influenza vaccine visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/flu/ or the New York State Department of health websites at www.nyhealth.gov/, or call the Nassau County Department of Health Immunization Office at (516) 227-9416.
