Beaches Closed

Due to heavy rainfall, the Nassau County Department of Health has closed the following 21 beaches as a precautionary measure, effective today, August 30th.

All 17 Nassau County North Shore Beaches*

and

On the South Shore in Nassau County:

Hewlett Point Beach

Island Park Beach

Phillip Healey Beach

Biltmore Beach Club

Storm water runoff can have a negative impact by elevating bacteria levels that are used to assess bathing water quality.   After the cessation of a major rain event, permitted beaches are usually closed as a precautionary measure for 24hours, or at least two turns of the tide, to wash away possible contaminants.  If there is no intermittent significant rainfall, beaches can then be reopened.

For up-to-date local beach information, call your village or town recreation department or call the Nassau County Department of Health Office of Recreational Facilities weekdays from 9:00 A.M.– 4:45 P.M. at (516) 227-9717.
