As part of his on-going Healthy Nassau campaign, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi announced that – starting this week – two Farmer’s Markets will operate this summer. One will return to its original location in Garden City, and a new market will open in Roslyn.
The Market at 101 County Seat Drive, in Garden City, will be open on Tuesdays, starting on June 3rd and will run to November 25th. The second Market is at Christopher Morley Park, in Roslyn, will be open on Wednesdays, starting on June 4th and will run to November 26th. Both will start at 7 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. Both markets will offer fresh produce – vegetables fruits, juices, honey, jams, jellies pickles, pies, and breads.
The Nassau County Attorney’s office and the County’s Department of Senior Citizen Affairs worked with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Farmer’s Market Federation of New York and the Long Island Grower’s Market to create both markets.
“Last year’s market was a huge success and I’m excited that Nassau County will now be home to two Farmer’s Markets,” stated Suozzi. “Residents can now enjoy fresh food, straight from the farm, without having to travel a great distance.”
Approximately 8-12 fresh-food vendors are expected to take part in the weekly markets. To encourage seniors to take advantage of this healthy option, the County’s Department of Senior Citizen Affairs will distribute vouchers, provided through a State program, to qualifying seniors to help them make purchases at the market.
