Legislator Scannell Congratulates Honorees At The Four Chaplains Program

Nassau County Legislator Joe Scannell (D-Baldwin) attended The Four Chaplains program at the American Legion Baldwin Post #246 and presented County Citations to three honorees, including Joseph Archer, the lone survivor of the U.S.A.T. Dorchester whose family accepted for him; Captain Robert Burns who accepted on behalf of the United Service Volunteers; and Sally Profeta a singer who has performed at many Legion and County functions.

“I am honored and humbled to attend the Four Chaplains event each year,” said Legislator Scannell. “It continues to inspire my respect for our patriots and the sacrifices they, and their families make.”

The Four Chaplains were the World War II members of the clergy who were Catholic, Protestant and Jewish, who went down together in 1943 with their torpedoed ship the U.S.A.T. Dorchester. Handing out the life jackets on deck, the chaplains were the first to realize that there weren’t enough for all of the soldiers. Heroically, they took off their own life jackets and gave them to waiting soldiers. Out of the more than 900 soldiers onboard only 230 were rescued from the icy waters.

Each year the Baldwin American Legion host The Four Chaplains program to honor those who have served their community in an exemplary fashion.
