Leg Toback Congratulates Intel Semi-Finalists

Nassau County Legislator Jeff Toback (D-Oceanside) congratulated Traci Krasne, Zachary Appelbaum, Meryl Natow, and Yevgeniy Yesilevskiy who were chosen as Intel semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search 2009. The four Hewlett High School seniors will receive a $1,000 award with an additional $1,000 going to his or her respective school.

The teenagers worked on the following projects:
• Yevgeniy Yesilevskiy - “The Complex and Elusive Nature of Contemporary Racism: An Experimental Study Linking Modern Racism to Correspondence Bias and Bias Blind Spot.”
• Meryl Natow - “A Test to Consider Predicting Parents’ Willingness to have Children Undergo Predictive Genetic Testing”
• Zachary Appelbaum - “Who R U? An Examination of Adolescent Text Messaging”
• Traci Krasne - “To Intervene or Not to Intervene? Adolescent Bystanders Confront the Multifaceted Nature of Bullying.”

Participating in the Intel Science Search requires a great deal of effort. Students submit a lengthy written report on an independent science-research project and are then judged by noted scientists from a variety of disciplines on their research, scientific originality, and creative thinking. This year’s semifinalists were selected from 1,609 entrants from 36 states, the District of Columbia and accredited overseas schools in India and South Korea.
