Legislator Bosworth Honors Barbara Berkowitz

2010 Nassau County Trailblazer

Nassau County Legislator Judi Bosworth (D-Great Neck) was very proud to recognize Barbara Berkowitz as this year’s Nassau County Trailblazer Award recipient. The Trailblazer Awards are part of a month-long celebration of Women’s History, held every year in March. Mrs. Berkowitz has lived in Great Neck since 1978 and has rendered exemplary service to her community as a member and President of the Great Neck Board of Education. Mrs. Berkowitz epitomizes what makes Great Neck “great.”

Legislator Bosworth said, “Barbara Berkowitz is a true unsung hero. As she continues her service as a trustee of the Great Neck Board of Education for 19 years and to lead the Board as President since 2006, she certainly merits being recognized as a Woman of Distinction. She, as well as the rest of the Great Neck Board of Education, deserves our deepest gratitude and respect for being responsive to the needs of the community, while making sure our children are provided with the tools to fulfill their greatest potential. She does all that while representing the core values of our entire community in a loving and caring way. I am so proud to have the opportunity to recognize Barbara at the Nassau County Legislature.”

Barbara Berkowitz was appointed to the Great Neck Board of Education in 1992 and successfully ran for election six times, serving for 19 years. She served as chairperson of the Board policy committee from 1993-2006, Vice president of the Board from 2000-2003 and President from 2006 until the present. Mrs. Berkowitz is a past PTA class parent and treasurer and president of the EM Baker Elementary School. She has also served as the school district’s liaison to the North Shore Child and Family Guidance program on cultural integration. She is married to Barry and the couple has an adult son.
