Legislator Bosworth: May is Melanoma Awareness Month

May is melanoma awareness month in Nassau County and Legislator Judi Bosworth (10th L.D.) urges all residents to pay close attention to the constant dangers of skin cancer.

Melanoma or skin cancer is the most common cancer affecting 15-29 year olds. “The World Health Organization has warned that those under the age of 30 using tanning beds increase their risk of cancer up to 75%,” said Legislator Bosworth. “I hope that our legislature will act to ban the use of tanning beds for those under the age of 18.”

Legislator Bosworth recommends regular visits to a dermatologist for skin exams and urges everyone going outdoors to use a reliable sun screen to prevent sunburn. “Use sunscreen whenever you are going outside, not just when you are at the beach or pool," said Legislator Bosworth. Another precaution Legislator Bosworth suggests is wearing a hat, sunglasses, and proper clothing to insulate your skin from the sun's harmful rays.
