From the Desk of Legislator Judi Bosworth |
I have never been supportive of the County Executive's plan to close half the police precincts in Nassau County, including our own 6th Police Precinct and I still do not support it. But the fact is that on March 5th, Ed Mangano and the Republicans in the Nassau Legislature were successful in doing just that. Since then, I have worked diligently and aggressively to make the best of a bad situation. I am proud to report that due to my efforts, and the efforts of my colleagues, we were successful in getting a guarantee in writing from the County Executive that there would not be one less patrol car in any of our neighborhoods. We have also been assured that, in addition to the POP officers who were originally allocated to the ‘policing center,’ located where the precinct currently sits, we will have a minimum of two detectives and a desk assistant physically stationed at that center. A deputy commanding officer also will be available specifically for our community for quality of life needs. In addition, the excessive amount of $50 million that the County Executive originally asked us to approve borrowing was decreased to less than $27 million at the Democratic Caucus’ behest. While this resolution is by no means perfect and while I still very firmly believe that the residents of the current 6th Precinct are best served by continuing to maintain a precinct house on Community Drive, it is a better solution than that originally proposed by the County Executive. As the plan is implemented by the administration, I welcome your feedback as to any issues that arise.
