Legislator Bosworth Brings Operation Safe Stop to the Great Neck School District

Legislator Judi Bosworth (D-Great Neck) brought Operation Safe Stop, a cooperative project supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, to the Manhasset and Great Neck School Districts within the 10th Legislative District. On April 24, police officers from the Sixth Precinct patrolled in marked and unmarked police cars near bus stops in order to issue tickets to drivers who pass stopped school busses.

The goal of Operation Safe Stop is to increase public awareness and education regarding both New York State Law and Public Safety. Ultimately, it helps to promote safe transportation of children to and from school and school activities.

“I am so pleased to have played a role in bringing Operation Safe Stop to the 10th Legislative District,” Legislator Bosworth said. “I’d like to thank Sue Auriemma of the Coalition for a Safer Manhasset for bringing this important program to my attention. I hope that today’s efforts will have served to raise our consciousness about the importance of following all traffic safety rules.”

Drivers are required to stop when approaching a stopped school bus from all directions. According to New York State law, it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights are flashing.

Legislator Bosworth ensured that her local community benefited from this important initiative by coordinating the efforts between the Sixth Precinct, Nassau County Traffic Safety Board, and the Manhasset and Great Neck School Districts. As a result of the program, the Sixth Precinct issued nine tickets for passing stopped busses as well as tickets for 15 other violations.

She was joined by Chris Mistron, Nassau County Traffic Safety Officer; Great Neck Superintendent Ron Friedman;

Manhasset Superintendent Charlie Cardillo; and Police Officers from the Sixth Precinct.
