Manorhaven Fifth Graders Learn About
Government With Legislator Wink
Legislator Wayne Wink (D-Roslyn) provided an opportunity for the fifth graders at Manorhaven School to learn about government at the local level holding a mock legislative session in the chambers of the Nassau County Legislature. The children who participated acted as legislators, reporters, lawyers, staff members, stenographers, and members of the public, debating the issue of whether cell phones are appropriate for students in the classroom. Legislator Wink, acting as the presiding officer, encouraged a spirited debate during the “session.”
“This was an excellent way to help the children learn about the process of how government operates, and how laws are passed,” Legislator Wink said. “I was impressed by their eloquence, preparation, interest, and dedication to learning all that the experience offered. The success of the mock session is certainly a reflection of the high level of commitment to education by teachers and administrators at Manorhaven School.”
